Claire Hill reusable cleansing pads

Cleansing pads: fad or fab?

Cleansing is non-negotiable. It’s the foundation for beautiful skin, but it doesn’t need to be complicated. We’re all for fast, efficient – dare we say effortless – cleansing.

Do I need one of those miracle cloths?

You mean cleansing pads! And yes, that’s exactly what you need. These ingenious facial cloths are made of teeny tiny fibres (finer than a strand of human hair) that gently but effectively sweep away makeup, sunscreen and grime from your skin. All you need to do is dampen the cleansing pad with an alcohol free micellar water and gently swipe over the complexion in circular motions. The science of friction does the rest. Simple as that!

Are cleansing pads reusable?

Yes! Sadly each year billions of disposable wipes are flushed into in our rivers and oceans, or end up in landfill, destroying the eco-system and harming wildlife. It’s just not cool. Reusable cleansing pads however are environmentally sustainable as they can be washed, again and again and again, and still retain their effectiveness.

Over time it’s inevitable that reusable pads will be marked with some permanent stains, but that doesn’t affect their cleaning ability – a quality bamboo velour pad will still retain its antibacterial and hypoallergenic properties and all its cleansing prowess, even if it has been aesthetically altered.

Are all cleansing pads created equal?

No! There are vital differences that you should consider before deciding which one to buy. Avoid synthetic materials and nylon threads, as every time you wash one of these, some of those tiny plastic fibres will wash down the drain and into the ocean. Look for organic and sustainable materials manufactured in mills that enforce strict social and environmental standards. This way your reusable pads will be TRULY eco-friendly.

Can cleansing pads remove makeup and sunscreen too?

They sure can. If you wear an oil-based foundation or sunscreen product, cleansing pads are going to be most effective if dampened with micellar water because the molecules that give makeup and sun protection their sticking powers are best loosened a little before being swept away by the cleansing pad. The micelles in micellar water attract and bind to impurities so that they can be gently lifted directly off the skin (instead of smearing it all round your face!) without damaging the skin’s natural protective barrier.

Are cleansing pads suitable for all skin types?

There isn’t a skin that doesn’t love a soft bamboo velour cleansing pad. In fact, they’re highly recommended for anyone with sensitive skin or acne-prone skin types. Just remember to apply gentle pressure when you’re cleansing, and to wash pads after use to avoid any bacterial build-up.

How can I tell if they’re cleansing my skin properly?

You should be able to see the grime that has lifted off your complexion on the cleansing pad. Continue to repeat the process with a new pad until pads pull away clean.

How do I keep cleansing pads clean?

The best maintenance method is to clean the pads with warm water and a little soap or mild detergent after every use. Or you can pop them in the washing machine on a warm gentle cycle, then tumble to revive their velvety texture or line dry away from direct sunlight.

Does washing wear them out?

As with any product there is variation in quality between brands, so some will last longer than others. If you want a cleansing pad that maintains its shape and structure for eons, choose a natural bamboo velour pad that is sewn together with super strong but soft organic cotton. While you’re reading the label with an eagle eye, check to see if the fibre that is used is free from harmful chemicals and dyes (because who wants that on your face every day and night?!).

If you’re crunched for time or just want to cleanse smarter, a cleansing pad is the easiest way to wipe away stubborn makeup, sticky sunscreen and dirt build-up. Thank us later peeps!
